History of Photojournalism: Assessment

In this lesson, students will take the quiz to assess their knowledge of history of photojournalism.

Aspects of exposure

In this 5-day lesson, students will research an aspect of exposure.

Managing equipment and collaborating with reporters

Students will see examples and evaluate the positives and negatives of different systems for planning photography, communicating with writers, working with the Maestro process and checking equipment out and in.

Composition basics for photojournalism

Students will learn basic composition techniques (rule of thirds, framing, leading lines, strong subject, angles, repetition, selective focus) as well as common composition errors.

Photography presentations & practice

Student groups will present the information they have prepared about a specific exposure technique.

Social media + photography

Students will be introduced to many issues surrounding social media, technology and photography, including copyright considerations and how to use photography effectively in different social media outlets.

Basic DSLR camera functions and skills

During this lesson, the teacher will work with students in small groups to teach practical basic skills when it comes to taking photos.

Shooting in manual

Students will learn about shooting in manual and have conversations about why manual shooting mode is useful.

Photojournalism project & assessment

Students will complete a miniature photo project as a way of demonstrating the knowledge they have learned over this unit.

Caption writing & headlining photos

Students will discuss the importance of including a caption for each photo included in a publication.

Assessment of exposure

In this lesson, students will take a quiz over exposure to assess whether or not they have learned the skills and strategies they have been practicing when it comes to exposure this week.

Planning visual coverage to attract attention

Using hard copies of local newspapers or the electronic resources located at the Newseum’s website, students will work with a partner to evaluate the front pages of local, regional, and national papers.

Photo essay design

In this lesson, students will design a photo essay using photographs that they have taken by making use of a digital design program such as InDesign.

File naming systems for publications

In this lesson about file types, students will complete a webquest that will allow them to explore different file types (.gif, .tif, .jpeg, and .png) and determine the differences between them.

Exploring the history of photojournalism

In this two-day lesson, students will work in groups to fill in the blanks on a photojournalism timeline and begin to make sense of photojournalism’s unique and complicated history.

Basics of Photojournalism: Review & Assess

In this review lesson, students will find and identify photos that they think use a specific composition rule.

Photo editing basics

During this two-day lesson, students will learn about basic photo editing skills, including cropping, color adjustment, resolution & file modes, dodging, burning, and cutouts.

What makes a photo powerful?

Students will examine a variety of photos and pick a photo that speaks to them.

Sports photos

Using a flipped classroom method, students will explore websites and YouTube videos for strategies and techniques for taking good sports photos.

Pushing photo editing boundaries

This four-day lesson is primarily focused on ethics in photo editing and RAW photos.
