"“DEI work is more than simply increasing the visibility of perceived diversity. It is more than having different faces for the sake of social capital (or, worse, avoiding judgment or critique). We must be aware of the positions of power that we may occupy and use that influence to reduce or eliminate barriers in order to increase the presence of those who do not have the same privileges. We must pay attention to the voices we don’t currently hear, understand why we don’t hear them and provide spaces where they feel safe and able to own a stake in the discourse. We must be vulnerable and empathetic enough to know that — even if we did not directly cause the problems — we are still responsible for addressing them, even when it makes us uncomfortable to do so."
