Gregory receives JEA’s Medal of Merit
The Journalism Education Association has chosen Peggy Gregory, of Phoenix, Ariz., as a 2012 Medal of Merit Award winner. This award is presented to JEA members who have made significant contributions to scholastic journalism.
Gregory, who retired in 2008 after 35 years’ advising The Demon Dispatch newspaper at Greenway High School in Phoenix, also advised the school yearbook and literary magazine, and the school’s parent newsletter.
She was named a Dow Jones News Fund Distinguished Adviser in 2007, has earned the James F. Paschal Award and a Gold Key from Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from JEA. She also has received the Forest R. Martin Award, signifying Arizona’s journalism teacher of the year.
She is the Language Arts Specialist for the Dysart Unified School District.
She chaired the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention in Phoenix in 2002 and 2009, and is a charter member of JEA’s mentoring program. She has been a board member of the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association for 34 years.
“Scholastic journalism is her love,” Carmen Wendt of Arizona said. “Peggy works to promote high school publications in her district, in Arizona, and nationally. She believes in them.”
Gregory received the Medal of Merit Nov. 17 during the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention in San Antonio.
