Steve Buttry post a great piece on his blog last week dealing with verifying information from Twitter. It really is a must-read for students. He covers a substantial number of tips and provides links to other articles and presentations on the topic. His overarching message here is to make sure you are judicious about verifying information on social media – just as you should be judicious about verifying information you obtain during an interview. He goes into depth with the following subheads:

  • Evaluating Twitter sources
  • Evaluate context
  • Connect outside Twitter
  • Evaluate the situation
  • Consider crowdsourcing
  • The girlfriend hoax (relating to the fake girlfriend of a Notre Dame football player)
  • How do you verify?
  • Attributions and more resources

Take the time to check the link and share it with your students. It’s got a lot of good information for anyone in the social sphere.
