I’ve had quite a few questions come in recently about whether or not student news sites need to comply with the U.S. Department of Justice’s updated Title II rule requiring state and local governments to ensure their websites and mobile apps meet accessibility standards.
One place you should start in understanding all of this is a post that was published by the SPLC in March. It’s a pretty quick read by lays out the information pretty clearly. The article talks about:
- How student news publications differ from public schools and universities
- How who has final say in the content of the student publication matters
- Why, regardless of what the law says for you, it might be a good idea anyway
The deadline for compliance (to governments of less than 50,000 people) is April 26, 2027.
We will work over the course of the next year to share other important articles and suggestions as it relates to the updated Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
