JEA and MyBrightMountain.com named Marek Makowski of Huntley High School in Huntley, Ill., and Claire Fahy of Convent of the Sacred Heart High School in San Francisco, Calif., each winners of a $1,000 scholarship for essays they wrote about their aspirations in journalism. The two were part of a national contest that attracted entries from across the country.

“Each of the students who entered our inaugural contest have shown us that despite the seismic shifts happening in the news business, the future is bright in their capable hands,” said W. Kip Speyer, president of MyBrightMountain.com. “Their passion and commitment to journalism is evident in their writing.”

Fahy’s and Makowski’s essays were among the 10 finalists posted on MyBrightMountain.com. A panel of judges chose Fahy as a winner and Makowski was chosen by visitors to the site as the second winner. Their winning entries and all the finalists’ essays can be read at: http://www.mybrightmountain.com/jea.aspx.
