Laura Negri, CJE, has been appointed to serve the Journalism Education Association as its Career and Technical Education chair.
Negri teaches at Alief Kerr High School in Houston and previously served the organization as a director-at-large from 2017-20. Appointed last week by JEA President Sarah Nichols, MJE, Negri follows previous CTE chair Nina Quintana, CJE.
“I enjoyed working with Nina on CTE projects when I was director-at-large, and I look forward to continuing that work and sharing the opportunities CTE offers for students and advisers with the JEA membership,” Negri said.
Negri and the CTE committee have developed resources to help journalism teachers navigate the CTE world. The guide to Career and Technical Education helps address common questions about state requirements, certification, funding and pathways.
“Laura’s expertise in the CTE arena has been a valuable asset within our community for several years, but I am even more appreciative of her ability to work within multiple adviser networks and bring projects to fruition,” Nichols said.
Negri plans to work with the committee to develop a collection of program profiles from different states and continue promoting the step-by-step guide to starting a CTE program. She is eager to welcome other members to join those efforts.
“With the addition of specific Career and Technical Education support for members in recent years, JEA has helped advisers align their programs to national and state requirements to qualify for federal funding,” JEA Executive Director Kelly Glasscock, CJE, said. “Laura has been a leader in driving those efforts and is a perfect fit to move the CTE initiative forward.”
