JEA has selected a novel as the Spring 2018 One Book: “Work Happy: What Great Bosses Know” by Jill Geisler.

As publication advisers, one of our most important tasks is creating our leadership team. When our student leaders thrive, the entire staff succeeds. But how can we encourage our editors to lead more effectively? What skills do they need to learn to make the publications classroom sing? Can our staffs learn to work together happily while meeting deadlines, producing content and accomplishing goals? To aid us in the answers, JEA has selected “Work Happy: What Great Bosses Know” by Jill Geisler as its spring 2018 One Book.

Full of practical suggestions, checklists and surveys, “Work Happy” offers concrete steps for improving collaboration, communication, conflict resolution, motivation, coaching and feedback. Both publication advisers and student leaders will find this book useful as they tackle next year’s plans and goals. We hope teachers will encourage their editors to read “Work Happy” and share in the One Book experience.

To help create a sense of community, JEA leaders will conduct a series of online chats and discussions in the upcoming months, culminating with a session on leadership at 9 a.m. EDT April 14 at the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism convention in San Francisco.

Geisler, the Bill Plante Chair in Leadership and Media Integrity at Loyola University Chicago and a former TV news director, will join us for the first chat on Twitter at 7 p.m. CDT March 7. Make sure to follow @JEAOneBook on Twitter and use #JEAOneBook on all related posts. JEA also has set up a Facebook Group for members to interact with each other as they read “Work Happy” this spring.

The JEA Bookstore will offer a special sale on the One Book: $12.50 for nonmembers and $11.25 for members using the bookstore discount code at checkout (plus shipping) at the JEA bookstore. Members should log in to the members-only area before ordering to get the discount code.
