Prospective Journalist of the Year applicants and their advisers are welcome to our next Portfolio Polish Zoom-in, focusing on the Photojournalism.portion of creating an online portfolio.

The gathering will be held Monday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. CST.

Panelists will include 2021 JEA Journalist of the Year runner-up Anna Vazhaeparambil of California, Missouri adviser and veteran photojournalist Kyle Carter, CJE and Cindy Todd, executive director of the Texas Association of Journalism Educators and a longtime adviser in the Lone Star State. JEA Journalist of the Year coordinator Joe Humphrey, MJE, will moderate.

“We hope to make photo portfolios stronger for applicants well-versed in that area,” Humphrey said, “but also provide timely tips to those who perhaps come from other backgrounds.”

Two additional Portfolio Polish Zoom-ins will be held this month: a Jan. 24 talk on design and a Jan. 31 discussion about web and social media. This Portfolio Polish will be available on demand as part of a growing collection of tutorial videos and other resources aimed at helping applicants for Journalist of the Year. The Journalist of the Year scholarship competition begins at the state level, with winning portfolios advancing to JEA, which will name one $3,000 scholarship winner and four runners-up, who each will receive $1,000 scholarships.
