As the board of directors began a new two-year term May 1, President Valerie Kibler, MJE, appoints Louisa Avery, MJE, to lead the Journalism Education Association’s awards committee as outlined in the bylaws (Article VII).
Avery advises the newspaper and online news site at the American School in London, England.
“We all know how difficult – yet, rewarding – advising is, which is why ‘encouraging and rewarding … teacher achievement’ is such an important part of JEA’s mission,” Avery said. “Although we don’t choose this job for the possibility of awards, recognition motivates and helps retain teachers, which is in the best interest of students and society as a whole.
“Recognizing advisers also connects with the organization’s commitment to diversity, which ends with ‘We are dedicated to providing a space where our members belong and matter, where they are supported as valued contributors and active collaborators and are challenged in their practice.’”
