How to repair a SDI Cable

We got some new cameras to start that year and the students have been using SDI cables to send the video feed direct from the cameras to broadcast. They finally had a couple mishaps in the past few weeks and a couple ends broke off two of the cables. Instead of tossing the cables and buying new, I decided to buy a few tools to repair the cables and see if we could salvage them.

The process actually went quite smoothly and both cables are back and working just like new.

There are a lot of videos out there that show you how to repair broken cables. I think this one does a nice, simple job of it. Our cables are the thicker 1694 ones so I can attest to the fact that this process works the same regardless of cable thickness.

In the video comments, you can see the list of components included here which are:

  • Stripper PA1283
  • Paladin Tools PA8000 Crimpall 8000 Crimper Frame + PA2699 DIE
  • BNC Tester EZ Checker 008
  • Cable Belden 1855

This whole process actually got me feeling much more comfortable now with buying this cable in bulk to cut and make specific lengths we need for a fraction of what they would cost pre-made.
