Apps for the student journalist: Evernote

What: Evernote

Platform: Desktop, iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, WebOS
Cost: Free (with an upgradable premium version for $4.99/month or $44.99 annually)

Evernote is a great app for journalists to use for gathering and organizing information. You can type notes, save photos and gather audio all within the app. In addition, it allows you to work on your mobile device or desktop computer and access all your information no matter where you are. While the app could be used in a variety of ways, here are the ways I think student journalists could get some use out of it:

  • Have interview questions stored on Evernote so you don’t have to flip back and forth when taking notes.
  • Take notes at events and save photos from the event within Evernote to help you with your reporting.
  • Use the audio capture feature to record an interview with a source (or even multiple sources at different times) and save it within your notes from the event.

You can easily search through your notes to find what you’re looking for and you can even share your notes with others if you are collaborating on a project.
