Camp Cronkite is a five-day media camp at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. High school students dive head-first into media. By day, Cronkite faculty, staff and student guides lead campers in hands-on learning in our state-of-the-art building on ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus; then, campers retreat across the street to Gordon Commons, our residential hall, for supervised R&R.
Campers come from across the country to grow their media skills—and get a taste of college life! Learn a variety of topics and skills within journalism and mass communication including digital journalism, broadcast journalism, sports journalism, digital marketing and so much more.
Iowa Summer Journalism Workshops

UNIVERSITY OF IOWA
Immerse yourself in an exciting journalism experience at one of the world’s most prestigious writing universities. You’ll sharpen your skills with expert instructors in the topic of your choice. Choose from one of nine workshops: Advanced Graphic Design; Broadcast Journalism; Digital Sports Storytelling; Investigative Reporting; Personal Writing; Photojournalism; Publication Leadership; Social Media Reporting; and Writing for Change. Experience college life as you live, work and have fun on campus with other students who share your talents and interests. For 70 years, the country’s best high school journalists have converged for intensive learning at the University of Iowa Summer Journalism Workshop.
Open Search High School Journalism Institute
July 7-17, 2025 (two 5-day sessions)
INDIANA UNIVERSITY
HSJI is a pre-college program for 14- to 18-year-olds hosted by The Media School at Indiana University Bloomington. Our 5-day workshops cover a wide array of journalism topics, including design, leadership development, photojournalism, social media, yearbook, and more. Hands-on training in and out of the classroom prepares student journalists for the upcoming school year, while networking opportunities provide the chance to connect with journalism professionals, award-winning advisers, other students with similar interests, as well as IU and HSJI alums. Tuition covers lodging in the dorm, meals in the campus dining halls, counselor-led activities, and more. Multicultural scholarships are available.
Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference
June 22-27, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
FREEDOM FORUM
One high school junior will be selected from each state and the District of Columbia for this free program, which includes behind-the-scenes access to D.C. newsrooms and journalists and a $1,000 college scholarship.
These 51 participants join a community of more than 1,500 program alumni who work at companies from Apple, ABC News and Amazon to the “Today Show,” the U.S. State Department, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, USA TODAY, ESPN, The New York Times and Vice. Participating students will get to hear from reporters and entrepreneurs, explore the sites of D.C., enjoy group dinners and game nights, meet students who share a passion for journalism, meet with distinguished Free Spirit alumni at a private dinner, connect with thought leaders and journalists at the Free Expression Awards and make lifelong friends and connections.
Established in 1999 to honor Al Neuharth, founder of Freedom Forum and USA TODAY, the annual conference is designed to inspire and encourage high school juniors to pursue careers in journalism and media.
More than 1,500 alumni have gone on to work for such organizations as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, USA TODAY, ESPN, network-affiliated TV stations, the “This American Life” podcast, entrepreneurial media outlets like The Juggernaut, and more.

Summer Press Academy

THE DAILY PENNSYLVANIAN
The Daily Pennsylvanian’s Summer Press Academy is a 3-day journalism program led by Penn students for high school students interested in journalism, media, and storytelling. Participants get to learn real reporting skills through hands-on workshops and guest lectures from CNN, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Politico. At the end of the camp, students will be given the opportunity to publish a piece through The Daily Pennsylvanian.

JEA Advisers Institute

JEA
The JEA Advisers Institute brings journalism teachers from across the country together for three days of adviser-specific training and networking.
This signature program focuses on equipping advisers with the fundamental and advanced skills necessary to guide journalism programs. Participants learn from other teachers, as well as industry partners and experts, so that advisers return to their schools with enhanced tools that strengthen their programs, including those with CTE funding.
