The Journalism Education Association approved two new proposals for the National High School Journalism Convention, signing contracts for Seattle in spring of 2021 and Kansas City in spring of 2024.
Both motions passed 7-0 in online votes conducted by the board of directors Dec. 19 and 28. The contracts also were approved by the National Scholastic Press Association, JEA’s convention partner.
“Seattle has a long and rich history hosting JEA/NSPA conventions, and we are eager to continue the steady connection to such a vibrant city. We were fortunate to negotiate an excellent contract, which will ensure the stability of the conventions, as well as connect members and students to industry leaders. Even though the convention is years down the road, we are already making connections with marquee business such as Amazon and Starbucks to develop unique convention experiences in 2021,” JEA Executive Director Kelly Glasscock, CJE, said.
The Seattle convention will again utilize the Washington State Convention Center, but in a new area. Attendees will have full use of the Conference Center, which is a different footprint from what was used in 2017. While the event also will make use of meeting space and sleeping rooms in the Sheraton Grand again in 2021, more rooms have already been secured in the area, with a greater emphasis on using the convention center itself.
The Kansas City convention will take place at the Sheraton Crown Center and Westin properties, which are connected via enclosed skybridge. This marks a location change from 2010 and also will be the first visit for a spring convention.
“I’m so pleased with Kelly and Laura’s efforts to pursue this improved space for Kansas City and secure important benefits like free internet for all attendees. Site visits require a unique combination of research, negotiation and vision, and I’m grateful for the legwork during a busy holiday season to lock in such a great contract for our members and their students. Having a convention in close proximity to JEA Headquarters, located at Kansas State University in Manhattan, during our 100th anniversary year presents a unique opportunity as well,” JEA President Sarah Nichols, MJE, said.
