1 For All announced today its Picture Freedom scholarship contest, which celebrates the five freedoms of the First Amendment, speech, press, religion, assembly and petition.

From Feb. 22 to 28, students 13 and older are encouraged to share original photos and artwork on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #PictureFreedom. Make sure that posts are public, and if posts are being shared on Facebook, the account should allow people to follow it. A panel of educators and First Amendment experts will pick the top 25 posts based on originality, creativity and clarity in conveying the theme of freedom. Winners will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.

“Picture Freedom is the perfect campaign to engage students in thinking about their First Amendment freedoms,” said Mark Newton, president of the Journalism Education Association. “Students are using the social media they so often get accused of abusing in a positive way. Most importantly, students are using their First Amendment freedom to share their ideas of freedom in creative and profound ways. I suspect students who participate in Picture Freedom will engage their peers and others to think more about the overall importance of all the freedoms afforded to all of us.”

“Picture Freedom” is supported by the American Society of News Editors, 1 for All, Journalism Education Association, John Seigenthaler Chair of Excellence in First Amendment Studies at Middle Tennessee State University, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and the Newseum Institute’s First Amendment Center, plus hundreds of teachers and journalists.
