The Journalism Education Association approved two new proposals for the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention, signing contracts for Minneapolis for spring 2026 and San Francisco for spring 2028.

Both motions passed 7-0 in online votes conducted by the board of directors this winter. The contracts also were approved by the National Scholastic Press Association, JEA’s convention partner.

“JEA and NSPA considered dozens of cities across the country,” JEA Executive Director Veronica Purvis said. “We examined many factors but ultimately decided that these locations are conducive for our convention. The Minneapolis and San Francisco venues understand our event needs and will provide an exceptional experience for our attendees.”

The Minneapolis convention will take place in the renovated Minneapolis Convention Center, while the San Francisco convention will return to the Marriott Marquis.

“San Francisco is one of our most popular convention destinations, and we’re excited to be returning there in 2028,” JEA President Val Kibler, MJE, said.

The spring convention was in San Francisco in 2023 at the San Francisco Hilton Union Square. The 2018 spring convention was at the Marriott Marquis. The spring 2028 convention will be the 10th held in San Francisco.

The 2026 convention will be the fourth to visit Minneapolis, but the first for a spring convention. The last time the national convention was hosted in Minneapolis was 2011.
