By Joe Humphrey, MJE, Journalist of the Year coordinator

The next Journalist of the Year Zoom-in will focus on the Law, Ethics and News Literacy section of the Journalist of the Year scholarship competition. Prospective Journalist of the Year applicants and advisers are invited to the discussion, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Guest speakers for the discussion include:

  • Adriana Chavira, MJE, an adviser at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School in Van Nuys, California
  • Hadar Harris, executive director of the Student Press Law Center
  • Kristin Taylor, MJE, a California adviser and JEA’s Scholastic Press Rights director

JEA Journalist of the Year coordinator Joe Humphrey, MJE, will moderate the Zoom-in.

“We expect all of our students to excel in the areas of legal, ethical journalism,” Humphrey said. “This session will help applicants understand some of the ways to highlight the work they probably are already doing in these areas.”

The Journalist of the Year scholarship competition begins at the state level, with winning portfolios advancing to JEA, which will name one $3,000 scholarship winner and three runners-up, who each will receive $850 scholarships.

This is the last of five scheduled Zoom-ins exploring various parents of the competition rubric. Previous Zoom-ins, the rubric and other award resources are available on the www.JEA.org.
