Journalist of the Year Zoom-in will explore editing, leadership, team building

The next Journalist of the Year Zoom-in will offer students and advisers a closer look at the editing, leadership and team building component of the scholarship competition. The discussion is the latest in a series of talks aimed at helping applicants sharpen their portfolios and applications.
The Zoom-in is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. CST.
Panelists for the session include three veteran journalism educators:
- Susan Gregory, MJE, of Conestoga High School, Pennsylvania
- Karl Grubaugh, CJE, a retired adviser from Granite Bay, California
- Lori Keekley, MJE, of St. Louis Park (Minnesota) High School
JEA Journalist of the Year Coordinator Joe Humphrey, MJE, will moderate the Zoom-in.
“Editing is one of the harder elements to demonstrate in the Journalist of the Year portfolio, and this talk will help applicants identify best practices for excelling in that area,” Humphrey said. “We will also showcase ways for students to spotlight their leadership and team building activities.”
The Journalist of the Year scholarship competition begins at the state level, with winning portfolios advancing to JEA, which will name one $3,000 scholarship winner and three runners-up, who each receive $850 scholarships.
Future Zoom-ins are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST Jan. 19 and Jan. 26.
