JEA seeks curriculum leaders for 2017 term
The JEA Curriculum Initiative is heading into its next cycle as a valuable member resource to meet teachers’ classroom needs teaching 10 key skills in 21st-century scholastic media.
Links to new lessons are posted first on JEA’s Twitter feed.
A few changes:
Educational Initiatives Director Megan Fromm, MJE, will oversee curriculum as part of the elected position. In addition, JEA will have two appointed curriculum coordinators to help facilitate behind-the-scenes aspects of the program, from leading the annual curriculum meeting to offering feedback and handling all editing, posting and promotion: Shari Adwers, MJE, and Abri Nelson, CJE. All three are veteran curriculum leaders and will guide teachers through the process as well as edit and promote lessons.
The timeline has been adjusted to coincide with elected and appointed leaders. The next curriculum term will begin May 1.In order to keep each module fresh and to provide opportunities for involvement, curriculum leaders may serve no more than three consecutive years in the role.
Here’s the timeline:
- March 9 – April 15 Curriculum leader application open
- April 15 Application deadline
- May 1 Curriculum leaders announced, term begins
- May 1 – July 10 Lesson creation
- July 10-13 Curriculum meeting at Advisers Institute
Curriculum leaders will produce six original lessons (complete with lesson plan, slideshow and/or handouts and samples, assessment and rubric) before the July meeting. After the July meeting, the coordinators will prepare and post these lessons, so a minimum of 60 new lessons will be available at the start of the school year for members to access in August.
Members interested in developing curriculum as part of one of JEA’s most important teams should check their calendars for July 10-13, 2017. Curriculum leaders have their flight and hotel paid by JEA to attend Advisers Institute in order to meet in person, network and collaborate with other leaders and share their expertise as session presenters.
Curriculum leaders earn a $1,000 stipend for submitting their work by deadline. The first installment will be $600 issued in July based on the initial six lessons.
In the time between September and March, leaders can work at their own pace to create four additional lessons (10 total for the one-year term). Following successful completion of those four lessons and ability to meet deadlines, leaders will receive the second installment of the stipend ($400).
As the largest organization in the country for journalism teachers and advisers, JEA serves the scholastic media community by providing resources to its members so they can offer their students the strongest programs possible.
