Molly Jean Clemons, 75, of Independence, Missouri, died unexpectedly Sept. 29, 2022, at Centerpoint Hospital in Independence.

Clemons spent most of her career in education, beginning as a journalism teacher and head of the English Department at Dekalb. She married Ron Clemons on April 27, 1982, and moved to Independence. Both were active in scholastic journalism throughout their entire careers.

Former JEA President H.L. Hall, MJE, said, “She and Ron both were outstanding leaders in JEA and helped make scholastic journalism better throughout the country.”

Molly taught English and journalism at Blue Springs High School for one year, then became assistant principal at Palmer Junior High, later moving to Truman High School for 10 years, before becoming director of secondary education and emergency preparedness for the school district.

Molly served as president of JEA from 1975 to 1977. She received JEA’s highest award, the Carl Towley Award, in 1980 and the Pioneer Award from the National Scholastic Press Association.

Former JEA President Candace Bowen, MJE, said, “She and Ron were the heart and soul of JEA back then. Both former presidents, they helped the organization grow and prosper.”

Molly served as editor of Communication: Journalism Education Today, the organization’s national magazine, for 15 years from 1982 to 1997.

Linda Puntney, MJE, former JEA executive director, said, “Perhaps her most influential role was as editor of C:JET where she crafted content to help teachers and advisers bring best-practice techniques and cutting-edge ideas to their staffs.”

Molly is survived by her husband, Ron, and their special puppy, Zoey.

Molly’s family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to one of the following organizations:
