JEA Contests Committee has created three student media contests to help kick off the JEA Centennial.

Contest 100A Writing — Stories of JEA: Life in Scholastic Journalism (profile story)

Contest 100B Photography — Images of JEA: Life in Scholastic Journalism (one feature photo)

Contest 100C Broadcasting — Stories of JEA: Life in Scholastic Journalism (video feature story)

Contest submissions may be broadcast, displayed or published in JEA publications and/or on its affiliated websites.

Winning entries will receive ratings of Superior, Excellent or Honorable Mention. Superior awards will be given to no more than 10% of the entries in the contest. Judges may give as many Excellent and Honorable Mention awards as appropriate.

Unlike standard NSMC contests, entries will NOT receive a critique.

Advisers should register students in advance of uploading contest submissions.

Contest submissions can be submitted by the the adviser or student Dec. 1 through Jan. 31, 2024. All submissions must be entered by 6 p.m. CST, Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024.

Contest 100A Writing — Stories of JEA: Life in Scholastic Journalism (profile story)

Write a personality profile of no more than 350 words about a Journalism Education Association teacher/adviser member at your school to help JEA showcase one of its many diverse members. We want you to introduce the JEA member at your school and share details that expose a different facet of their life as a scholastic journalism adviser. Give the readers a combination of quotes, details, facts and descriptions to show more than tell. Help the readers get to know your adviser like you do.

Contest 100B Photography — Images of JEA: Life in Scholastic Journalism (one feature photo)

Submit a feature photo with a complete caption that captures a storytelling moment about scholastic journalism at your school. The photo should help JEA showcase one of its member schools. The photo does not need to have been published.

Entry will be uploaded as a JPG.


Contest 100C Broadcasting — Stories of JEA: Life in Scholastic Journalism (video feature story)

Prepare a video feature story about a Journalism Education Association teacher/adviser member at your school with a Total Running Time of 3:00 (+ or – 3 seconds) to help JEA showcase one of its many diverse members. We want you to introduce the JEA member at your school and show us details about their life as a scholastic journalism adviser. The piece may include a reporter’s voice-over, interviews, videotaped shots and sound bites. It should NOT include any added music, images or material created by any source besides the student completing the entry.

Entry will be uploaded as a URL.


Contest Information & Guidelines

  • The student’s adviser must be a current JEA member.
  • A student may enter only one category. Each JEA member may submit ONE entry per contest. If a school has multiple JEA members, each member may submit an entry for each contest.
  • There is no cost to enter.
  • JEA’s National Student Media Contest system will be used for submission.
  • Winners’ names and schools will be published on the JEA website and/or on its affiliated websites.
  • Entries must be uploaded to the NSMC site by 6 p.m. CST Jan. 31, 2024.
  • No late entries will be accepted.
  • JEA staff (staff@jea.org) is available to assist with any technical difficulties encountered while getting entries submitted to the media contest website, and to consult with advisers and students to advise them in getting their entry prepared for upload. All work on the entry must be done by the student.
