DC Quiz Bowl winners nov 2014

Fall 2014 National Journalism Quiz Bowl winners
Farren Vaughan, Josh Svoboda, Vanessa Gregorchik and Virginia Call, all seniors in the duPont Manual High School journalism and communication magnet program, celebrate their win at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. Vaughan is an editor-in-chief of the online publication RedEye; the others are editors on the Crimson yearbook staff. Svoboda also was on the winning Quiz Bowl team at the spring 2014 San Diego convention.

Topping other teams in its knowledge of current events, pop culture, journalism and civics, a four-person team from duPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky, won the National Journalism Quiz Bowl Nov. 8 at the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Washington, D.C.

duPont Manual High School is a repeat winner in the event, having taken the trophy at the spring national convention in San Diego.

The team of Virginia Call, Vanessa Gregorchik, Josh Svoboda and Farren Vaughan first had to qualify for the buzzer rounds by taking a test Nov. 7.

Thirty-two teams took the preliminary seeding test. There were 16 teams in the final bracket of four rounds. Round 1 had 10 questions; Round 2 had 12 questions; and Rounds 3 and 4 had 15 questions.

Teams were from Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.

James Miller, Liz Palmer, CJE, and Amy Ritchie are journalism advisers at duPont Manual.

Team B from Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, was runner-up. Susan Gregory, MJE, and Cyndi Crothers-Hyatt, CJE, are the students’ advisers.
