Board approves convention contract, bylaw change

The Journalism Education Association board of directors met Nov. 1 in Chicago prior to kickoff of the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention.
A live demonstration online from Kate Dubiel in her office at JEA Headquarters provided a walk-through of the new Write-off contest system in its late stage of development. Board members had the opportunity to view components of the site and ask questions.
Reports included updates about certification, mentoring, awards, JEA Flipboard, NCTE, One Book, C:JET, digital media, curriculum, CTE and critique training in addition to the headquarters report from Executive Director Kelly Glasscock, CJE, with financial information and a convention update. Glasscock reported registration for the Chicago convention as 6,318.
The board approved 7-0 to approve signing a contract for Philadelphia to host the fall 2021 convention.
The board approved 7-0 to eliminate the geographic boundaries used to determine eligibility for director-at-large positions.
In addition, Vice President Val Kibler, MJE, shared highlights from the JEA/NSPA Partner Project as a way to showcase the program’s success and continue planning for its expansion.
