PROPOSAL TO FUND NATIONAL SEARCH FOR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Submitted by Mark Newton, MJE
October 19, 2016
WHEREAS, the Journalism Education Association, in conjunction with Kansas State University,
is conducting a national search for an executive director; and
WHEREAS, the JEA board of directors has been granted more control over this search,
acknowledges its importance to the organization and relishes the challenges required to identify,
secure and recommend to KSU the best person to serve as its chief operating officer; and
WHEREAS, there are identifiable expenses that will occur within the current budget year related
to the conducting the search, such as advertising and promotion, travel for board members on
the search committee and travel for finalist candidates, among additional and unforeseeable
expenses; and
WHEREAS, JEA will be responsible for 80 percent of some of those expenses and 100 percent
of others; therefore
I HEREBY MOVE, the Journalism Education Association allocate $13,000 from its reserve
(investment) funds to its 2016-17 budget to cover all expenses related to the search.
Projected Budget:
Board travel* (3 members for 3 visits for 2 nights) — $8,910.00
$390 per flight = $3,510
$150 per hotel per night = $2,700
$150 per day for sub costs = $2,700
Candidate travel (3 finalists for 1 visit for 2 nights) — $2,070.00
$390 per flight = $1,170
$150 per hotel per night = $900
Advertising and Promotion — $500.00
Miscellaneous — $1,520
Perhaps more finalist visits, and more board visits
Perhaps more nights required of finalists
Perhaps more advertising opportunities, longer time frame, etc.
* 100 percent JEA (all others are split 80/20 JEA and KSU)
PROPOSAL TO INCREASE HEADQUARTERS STAFF BONUSES
Submitted by Mark Newton, MJE
October 19, 2016
WHEREAS, The Journalism Education Association appreciates the contributions of the
headquarters staff to the well-being and operation of the organization; and
WHEREAS, the organization has awarded a year-end bonus in recognition of that appreciation;
and
WHEREAS, that bonus must now be considered part of each staff member’s salary and include
deductions for Social Security, Medicare and taxes; therefore
I move, on the recommendation of the executive director, the merit bonuses for fiscal year 2017
be increased $500 and “student labor” be reduced $500 (from $1,000) to cover the deductions
for Social Security, Medicare and tax.

The contract proposal is good and the space is being held until Nov. 15, 2016,
