By Joe Humphrey, MJE, Journalist of the Year coordinator

Prospective Journalist of the Year applicants with an interest in strengthening the broadcast section of their portfolio are invited to the next Zoom-in, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST Tuesday, Jan. 19.

The discussion is the latest in a series of talks aimed at helping applicants sharpen their portfolios and applications.

Emily Hood, 2020 JEA Journalist of the Year and now a student journalist at the University of Missouri, will join a Jan. 19 Zoom-in to offer tips about broadcast journalism.

Guest speakers for the discussion include:

  • Omar Delgado and Christina Insua, moderators of CCNN Live at Christopher Columbia High School, Miami
  • Emily Hood, a University of Missouri student and 2020 JEA Journalist of the Year
  • Jonathan Rogers, MJE, an adviser at Iowa City High School

JEA Journalist of the Year coordinator Joe Humphrey, MJE, will moderate the Zoom-in.

“As a longtime Journalist of the Year judge, I’ve found that many of our competitors tend to be ‘print’ journalists who really struggle in the broadcast area,” Humphrey said. “The goal of this session will be to really help those broadcast non-natives learn the essentials of assembling a package.”

Hood will discuss a key component of her winning 2020 entry, a recurring news update called “The Hood Report” she devoted as a student at Francis Howell North High School, Saint Charles, Missouri.

The Journalist of the Year scholarship competition begins at the state level, with winning portfolios advancing to JEA, which will name one $3,000 scholarship winner and three runners-up, who each will receive $850 scholarships.

Previous Zoom-ins, the award rubric and other award resources are available on the Journalist of the Year page. A final Zoom-in is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST Tuesday, Jan. 26.
