I’ve been having my students in my introductory broadcast class do most all of their work on the mobile phones the past couple of years. In that time, it moved from what seemed to be 70% of students having some sort of mobile device to use to record video to more than 95% of students. As a result, I’ve worked to update my gear in the room to give them some tools to make the quality of their video work a little better.
One of the devices I’ve brought into the mix are wireless lav mics that work with iPhones. I’ve got a few wired lav mics that have a lightning connecter and work well with iPhones, but I tested and found some wireless ones that work pretty well and are affordable as well.

I’ve gotten a hand full of those sets and been super impressed with them. They do a good job of isolating the sounds so the audio is better than what the internal mic on an iPhone picks up and they don’t require batteries. Having said that, they do need charged, but you can easily make yourself a little charging station with a hub like this to ensure they are charged and ready to go when students need them.
