I’ve already shared on this site what I’m doing with my introductory broadcast journalism class and today I thought I’d share what I have planned for my publication staff students.
As with the introductory class, I know each of my students have different access to technology and their situations are each unique. So, my goals for creating work for the coming week were as follows:
- Work to allow students who want to finish publication work for the year the chance to do that. This is everything from finalizing the last two newspapers as well as creating content for the social channels and website.
- Give students options and choice for what they would like to do or are able to do given their circumstances.
- Give them some opportunities to learn some things they haven’t had the time or taken the time to learn.
If you look at the handout I’ve shared, I think you will find the options pretty self explanatory. Students were given this sheet and give five days to ask questions, decide what they’d like to do and then let me know. After those five days I went ahead and sent follow up instructions for each.
I’m giving students three weeks for this first round of projects. That might be anything from writing a story and designing a page for the newspaper or writing two web stories to taking a course in Lynda and telling me what they learned or helping maintain the social accounts.
Lots of flexibility and lots of options.
I will make myself available to answer student questions and give them feedback on their work throughout the week and I will have a weekly Google Form for checkin so I hear from everyone at least once each week. They will be able to update me on progress there and let me know what I can do to help.
