My students have been livestreaming ballgames for years. They run the whole show with camera operators, announcers and producers. Each game, one of the producers was in charge of making sure the scoreboard was kept updated with how much time was on the clock, what the score was, what inning it was and more.
For the last couple of years the students have been using Production Truck from the team at Hudl and we had noticed there seemed to be options built in to sync up the scoreboard on the field or in the gym to the livestream — but we hadn’t taken the time to figure it out.
Over winter break, after reaching out to the Hudl and Scorebird teams, we got a NeST device and connected it for a couple of streams in January. The setup of the device was fairly easy and it worked as promised, automatically syncing up what was on the scoreboard in the gym to what the viewers at home were seeing on the screen.
Not only did this sync things up so that the scoreboard is 100% accurate in real time, it also has freed up one of our producers to focus more on in-game instant replays and posting/promoting the game on socials as the game is going on.
You can see a sample of the scoreboard graphic that’s synced up in this stream here.
While there is an annual cost for the NeST device, it’s proven to be an invaluable tool for the livestream team and there are many other features with it that make it a valuable resource for athletic directors and departments who may just end up footing the bill for you and your team.
