The Online News Association announced the finalists in its 2014 Online Journalism Awards contest recently, and if you have a few hours to kill, take a look at the list (or at the very least, bookmark it for later viewing). It is seriously inspirational.
In the press release, ONA included a great quote from Joshua Hatch, ONA Board member and Online Journalism Awards Committee Chair. He said:
“In case there was any doubt, this year’s finalists demonstrate that digital journalism isn’t just bells and whistles, which some think of when they think ‘digital’… It’s clear that when journalists go all in on digital, they create completely new and engaging ways to tell stories and inform readers.”
That’s a good message for scholastic journalists exploring new ways to use digital storytelling to go beyond what they are capable of in print. Many of the projects could be replicated by localizing the topic or approach to students’ individual campuses. I’ll be sharing several of them with my students over the course of the next few weeks, and in turn, issuing them a challenge.
