Digital Media Courses:

Year 1 program: The goal of our Year 1 program is to teach students the journalism basics that will help them to begin or improve programs at their own high schools. Accordingly, students in our Year 1 program study journalism basics in the morning and put their new knowledge to practice during afternoon clinics and team labs. Topics covered include: reporting and writing basics; online news and headline writing; social media; hyper-local reporting; alternative/ short-form story structures (blogs, podcasts, galleries, polls); introduction to digital storytelling tools; elements of multimedia feature packages; crowdsourcing; and working with School Newspapers Online websites. Students will take photos, capture and edit video, write stories and post content using iPad2s. A midweek reporting expedition to San Francisco will include city highlights and a visit to a local media company. Some options we’ll be working on include social media companies Facebook, Twitter and Storify, as well as local newspapers, such as Stanford Daily, the Palo Alto Weekly and the San Francisco Chronicle. Students participating in this program will develop digital journalism skills by working in teams to create multimedia content for their own websites using iPads.

Year 2 program — new! The thrust of our new Year 2 program is to help students to put their multimedia creativity to work in the real world. Accordingly, returning and/or advanced students will spend three days in morning master classes with professional working journalists, learning in-depth about editorial writing, science writing, photography, videography, newsroom diversity, freelancing and how to pitch a story. Year 2 students will also go on field trips with the larger camp population, but as this will be as smaller, more nimble group, we will also work to squeeze in additional trips to local media companies that the larger group does not attend. Afternoons will be open lab time, in which students will cover campus events, interview newsmakers, and create multimedia stories. Students will take photos, capture and edit video, write stories and post content using iPad2s. Team leaders and guest editors will help students learn how to pitch and submit their work to local and national news providers, such as Patch, the Stanford Daily, America’s Wire and New America Media. Our aim is to have students participating in this program leave with a portfolio of publishable work.”
