Seven two person teams from around the country will be selected to participate in a pilot project to connect student journalists with working digital professionals during the JEA/NSPA convention this April. On Friday, April 11, Geoff McGhee, currently at Stanford University, formerly at The New York Times, Le Monde and ABC, will participate in an online conversation during the convention’s Friday morning Break With a Pro Session. The event will run from 9—10a.m. PST.The event will be entirely online, so students who are not at the convention will have a chance to take part from their own schools.
McGhee, creator of the film Journalism in the Age of Data, is the Creative Director of the Bill Lane Center for the American West at Stanford University The Center is a media laboratory where scholars, researchers, and journalists collaborate on interactive stories that use emerging multimedia, data visualization, and mapping techniques. During his eight years at The New York Times, McGhee helped to found its online graphics and multimedia teams.
The live streaming event is part of a series, Conversations with Journalists who Code. The project encourages student journalists to explore online journalism though collaborative projects and networking. In small online sessions, professional journalists describe their own learning paths and actively brainstorm projects and ideas with high school journalists.
The program, a partnership between JEA Digital Media and The Newton Street Study Group, will take place on The MacArthur Foundation’s Digital Media Learning forum HOMAGO. HOMAGO requires a Google+ account.
