This article from January came across my Twitter feed earlier this week. To be honest, I was a little skeptical prior to clicking through as most lists like this I’ve read have, in my opinion, fallen short of what students actually need in 2012. I’m glad I clicked through though because Dave Andrade has compiled a nice list here. The 10 Tech Skills Every Student Should Have includes:
- Internet searching
- Office suite skills
- Self learning of tech and where to go for help
- Typing
- Social Media
- Netiquette
- Safety and Security
- Hardware basics and troubleshooting
- Backup data
- Finding apps and software
He actually added an 11th after he posted originally, “Copyright and Citing Sources.”
In his post, Dave talks about why each are important and has linked to resources for each of the 11 that provide more information and help. It’s a great link to click through and read and share with students. These are skills all of us need to be teaching in our classrooms. While I touch on all of them at some point throughout the year in varying degrees, I was inspired to do a bit more in the coming months and I found the list as a helpful reminder of the types of skills we need to be stressing with our students (and ourselves).
