This is the FHNtoday.com Web Posting Checklist for the publications staff at Francis Howell North High School. It fits perfectly with the web content system the web team has created for FHNtoday.com where:

  1. Writers create posts on the backend of the WordPress site
  2. A select handful of editors, which rotate from week to week, look at the stories that are pending review and publish them
  3. After publishing, the web copy coaches send a quick e-mail to the writer with feedback

The problem we were running into with our system was that not all writers were doing everything they needed to do to make sure their story could be posted and look good. For example, some would forget to set a featured image or remember to set their post as “pending review.” As a result, the editors could not publish their story and that caused problems with deadlines and grades, since the staff is graded partially on the ability to meet deadlines.

By putting the expectations and resources on one page, all the web writers should be able to be successful the first time they try to post. The web editors will save time by not having to explain to a writer that their story can’t be published until they do items a, b, c, etc. If stories meet all the criteria on the checklist, they will be able to be published more quickly. This should help the web copy system produce consistently better good stories more efficiently for the site, which is better for everyone on staff.
