This award is given to a professional journalist, professional media outlet or other individual or group making a significant contribution to scholastic journalism. JEA members are encouraged to nominate worthy individuals or groups. Several awards may be presented each year.

Entry Criteria

Nominator must be a current JEA member. The following materials will be needed:

  • A letter of recommendation from the nominator explaining how this professional journalist, professional media outlet or other individual or group made a significant contribution to scholastic journalism.
  • A short bio (65-100 words) about the nominee that can be used in the awards ceremony. Include recent work history, awards and other career highlights.
  • Up to three letters of support for the nominee.
  • Copies of or links to articles about or by the nominee (limit four pages).
  • A high-quality headshot and/or candid photo of the relevant individuals being nominated, if applicable. If not, a high-quality company logo should be provided.

How to Apply

The application will open on or around May 15. Nominations are due by 11:59 p.m. CDT July 15.

Award Recognition

Recipients will be honored at the Saturday awards luncheon during the Fall JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention.

Candace and John Bowen Adviser First Amendment Leadership Award

Deadline: December 15, 2025
This annual award will go to a JEA member whose work has actively supported, defended and fought for the First Amendment rights of student journalists and their advisers on the local, state or national level. The winner will receive a $1,000 prize.

Rising Star Award

Deadline: July 15, 2026
Rising Star trophies are given to advisers who are in their first five years of advising a media program and have shown great dedication to scholastic journalism and have had success advising at least one media program.
