NHSJC speaker portal

The JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism convention is the largest gathering of high school journalists in the country.

Typically, the on-site conventions comprise around 300 breakout sessions. For the spring convention, we are aiming for around 25 on-demand sessions more tightly chosen with attention to the topic, speaker, expertise, past performance, etc. We want NHSJC attendees to experience the best of the best.

For the spring convention, we are accepting session proposals from professional journalists.

Dates to remember:

Feb. 5: Speaker proposals due
March 3: Session videos due

If you have any questions about the fall convention, contact JEA Assistant Director Lindsay Porter through email Porter@jea.org or phone 316-204-2004.

Speaker proposals

If you are willing and able to participate in the fall convention, please complete this short form by Feb. 5 to agree to the pre-recorded session format and agree to the speaker consent form.

The form includes:

  • Session topic
  • Session title
  • Session description
  • Speaker biography
  • Speaker headshot upload
  • Speaker contact information
  • Speaker consent form agreement checkbox

Sessions for the spring convention should be presented in video. Between now and March 3, record your session presentation. Your session should last 30-40 minutes.

Video session format recommendations

You can record your session with any application you feel comfortable with. We recommend two applications that are free and easy to use.

Record a meeting

Whatever application you choose, please follow these guidelines for the pre-recorded video:

  • Sessions should be 30-40 minutes in length.
  • We want to see your face. Don’t just record the slides with audio, please include the thumbnail video of yourself.
  • Please include slides with the educational information you are presenting — it adds to the educational experience for our attendees.
  • Record in front of a clean background.
  • Make sure you have adequate light that your face is clearly visible and not silhouetted with backlight.

Below is an example of a successful video session you can use as a guide.

You are encouraged to share supporting documents to include in your session presentation — handouts, the presentation slideshow or web links are examples of things we can include. There is a place to include these documents when you share your video file.

Videos are due by March 3. Please submit the video file or download link through the online form. If your video is larger than 10GB, please contact Porter@jea.org for alternative submission methods.
