JEA seeks member engagement strategist

The Journalism Education Association has announced a job posting to hire a member engagement strategist to start September 2024.

Planning for the new position started more than a year ago. Executive Director Veronica Purvis met with staff as well as association leaders for multiple strategic planning sessions to design the position. 

The engagement strategist will be responsible for three main areas: member development, marketing and communication, and business development and sales. 

“Evaluating JEA’s needs has been a priority which has included the staffing assessment and related restructuring,” Purvis said. “It began with investing in our curriculum which resulted in hiring a curriculum specialist last summer. Another major opportunity has been in membership engagement and growth. This new position is created to focus on that along with the integrated marketing, communication and development areas to serve our members and the larger scholastic journalism community.”

JEA President Val Kibler, MJE, said the new position will expand the organizational capacity in key areas and help refocus on members’ needs while offsetting the workload of other staff members and volunteers.

“The current JEA board has as one of its goals improving the member experience so that we retain and gain even more members,” Kibler said. “This new position will allow us to have a staff member devoting much time and energy to our members and that’s most important to us.”

JEA Member Engagement Strategist

While the position is hired through the university system, the full attention of the engagement specialist will be with JEA. No other teaching obligations or university responsibilities are associated with the position. The engagement strategist is an employee of Kansas State University, JEA’s host institution, however, this position has the option to work remotely.
