JEA Advisers Institute moves online

Journalism advisers face new challenges and unique struggles that may send even the most veteran educators looking for guidance. Providing access to essential educational resources is JEA’s top priority, which is why all instruction has moved online for JEA Advisers Institute, July 6-9, 2020.

Budgets are strained, travel is restricted and personal health and safety is a top concern for all. A virtual conference helps JEA meet its goal of serving the journalism education community in the best way possible. At a time when more teachers need assistance, JEA Advisers Institute will help them develop core instructional knowledge for a journalism classroom.

JEA Executive Director Kelly Glasscock, CJE, said, “A virtual conference will help reach more advisers around the country — without any travel involved, all who seek access to professional development can participate. Our strategy is to remove the barriers between our community and the support they need.”

The new registration rate for the online-only conference was reduced to $85 for members and $99 for nonmembers. The same instructors will participate, and conference programming will be available both live and on demand. The virtual model also helps advisers save on travel and hotel expenses.

“Advisers Institute has always been about inspiration and innovation,” JEA President Sarah Nichols, MJE, said. “While I’m disappointed we won’t be gathered in the same venue physically, I have no doubt this summer’s conference will continue to inspire advisers from all types of programs and experience levels. And I know providing instructional sessions and interactions virtually will give us a chance to experiment and innovate with new professional development models that can serve our members for years to come.”
