CALL TO ORDER

The general membership meeting of the Journalism Education Association was held Friday, Nov. 17, 2017, in the Cumberland G room at the Hyatt Regency Dallas hotel. It began at 8 a.m. and was presided over by Sarah Nichols with Connie Fulkerson as secretary.

Motion: A motion to approve the minutes of the 2017 Seattle meeting was made by Linda Barrington and seconded Megan Fromm. (passed unanimously)

REPORTS

A. Summary of board action

Sarah Nichols summarized the following board action:

Motions passed

The board affirmed four electronic votes taken since the spring convention and passed four motions at the board meeting in Dallas. They were:

• To endorse Nevada SB 420, increasing protection for student publications.

• To endorse Rhode Island HB 5550: Student Journalists’ Freedom of Expression Act.

• To approve minor budget adjustments for FY 17-18, including funds for new social media, CTE, higher ed positions.

• To approve Marriott Orlando World Resort contract for fall 2020 and 2026 National High School Journalism Conventions.

• To allow the executive director to sign the contract to have the 2023 and 2027 fall national conventions in Boston.

• To allow the executive director to sign the contract to have the 2020 spring and 2025 fall national conventions in Nashville.

• To increase the National High School Journalism Convention registration rate to $99 earlybird pricing ($109 after) and $119 nonmember earlybird ($129 after) effective fall 2018.

• To approve the 990 form as presented to the board.

Also discussed at the board meeting

Nancy Smith, Contest Committee chair, reported that the Quiz Bowl qualifying test taken before the convention will be discontinued after the Dallas convention. Some of the broadcast contests were revamped for this convention. New contests will be tested this convention.

Kelly Glasscock gave a preview of what JEA programmer Kate Dubiel has been developing to make the Write-off registration process easier for advisers and students.

Val Kibler reported on the JEA/NSPA Partner Project at Willamina High School in Oregon. Anthony Whitten and Michelle Balmeo assisted at the state level. There is potential for getting a virtual model for this training so more schools can be reached each year.

Sarah Nichols reported on the National Critique Summit and training for judges.

Megan Fromm reported on the Curriculum Initiative activity. Applications will be open soon for a new round of curriculum leaders.

The board reviewed its goals and what it would like to accomplish by the end of the year. Discussion will continue at the follow-up meeting.

B. Conventions

Mark Murray, Dallas convention chair, welcomed everyone to the convention.

Motion: Moved by Candace Bowen and seconded by Kim Green to commend the Dallas local committee for their work leading up to and during the convention. (passed unanimously)

Kelly Glasscock said JEA and NSPA are confirming plans for conventions in Boston, Orlando and Nashville.

He said there are about 5,000 people registered for the Dallas convention.

San Francisco is coming up in the spring with a new convention model. There will be more hands-on longer workshops to develop skills along with the shorter breakout sessions. The fall 2018 convention in Chicago will be earlier than usual (Nov. 1-4) so start planning early.

C. Financial reports

Kelly Glasscock reported that the net revenue on JEA’s profit and loss statement was $20,031.20 as of Nov. 2, 2017.

ITEMS OF CONCERN, ATTENTION, UPDATE

Val Kibler discussed the Partner Project at Willamina High School in Oregon and the potential for expansion of this program.
Lori Keekley asked for people to contact her about New Voices legislation grassroots efforts. She encouraged members to apply for the First Amendment Press Freedom Award.

Megan Fromm said there are four curriculum samples outside the paywall so people can get a preview. She encouraged state directors to send potential members there to see what the Curriculum Initiative has to offer. More than 60 new lessons have been added by the current curriculum leaders. Applications for a new round of curriculum leaders will be available soon. JEA/NSPA research grant is now available. Fromm encouraged people to apply.

Kim Green presented how many people will be receiving certification recognition at the Dallas convention.

Linda Barrington distributed JEA Mentoring materials to attendees interested in learning more about how to bring mentors to their state.

NEW BUSINESS

No new business was introduced by members.
