Special Projects Funding

The Journalism Education Association’s board of directors set funds to be spent on “special projects” that were proposed by JEA members. The goal was to allow a wider range of ideas to be heard and to allow for projects to be proposed throughout the year, as opposed to only during the budgeting cycle.

Who is allowed to apply for special project funding?
Anyone who is affiliated with JEA may apply for funding, including members, state directors, board members, committee members, etc.

What projects are typically funded?
Projects need to be specific and carefully outlined, with measurable and definable goals or outcomes. Those goals must support or enhance JEA’s mission and core values of pedagogy, advocacy, innovation, community and excellence. Special consideration is given for projects that strengthen JEA as an organization. So far, accepted special projects include:

Who decides whether the project is approved?
JEA’s finance committee, which is composed of the JEA president, vice president, secretary and past president. JEA’s executive director serves as a consultant to that committee.

How long does the process take?
The turnaround time for review and response is generally 10 business days, although the committee might ask for more information from the applicant, which could potentially delay a final decision.

Can I apply more than once?

How much funding can I apply for?
There are no restrictions on the amount of the funding request, but, because there are a limited number of funds available for special projects, please be considerate of other members who might have funding requests of their own.

How do I apply?
The application form for special projects is available exclusively online. You might wish to develop and research your answers to the questions prior to beginning the form, since the form lacks the ability to save your progress. If you have problems with the form or further questions about special projects funding, please email executive director Kelly Furnas at furnas@ksu.edu.
