The Journalism Education Association has joined The Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21), a coalition of education, business and government leaders whose collaborative focus is to embrace 21st century education as a foundation for lifelong learning.

As a member organization, JEA will work with partners to bring about changes in state, local and national policy around the shared goal of ensuring that students are prepared for success in school, careers and life.

“The Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21) is the most auspicious complement to our efforts in advancing JEA’s mission in today’s educational environment. The benefits of the networks generated through our new membership with P21 are immeasurable and will bear fruit long into the future,” said Executive Director Kelly Glasscock, CJE.

The JEA board of directors began exploring possible membership in 2016. Glasscock and President Sarah Nichols, MJE, attended the P21 Strategic Council meeting Oct. 3-4 in Washington, D.C. as guests, during which time they met with the organization’s leadership and members.

“Connecting directly with leaders from so many high-powered companies and organizations confirmed the potential in the P21 network. We’ve already developed meaningful relationships that will enhance our efforts with administrators and policymakers. Everyone we met had ideas for us and was genuinely interested in furthering our mission to showcase the benefits of scholastic media education,” Nichols said.

Dave Ross, P21 Chief Executive Officer, is both a former educator and journalist.

“I am thrilled to have JEA as part of P21’s growing coalition. As one reflects on the attributes of a quality journalist, it is evident that she must embody the 4Cs — the true essence of 21st century learning,” Ross said. “JEA’s approach to cultivating the next generation of journalists naturally aligns with the vision and mission of P21. Being able to think critically, communicate effectively, collaborate with diverse populations, and all in a creative manner is essential to the future success of all students. Journalism classes are incredible means for students to further hone these essential skills.”

Glasscock and Nichols will attend the next Strategic Council meeting in Washington, D.C. in February. In addition, Educational Initiatives Director Megan Fromm, MJE, will represent JEA at Patterns of Innovation, a P21-sponsored conference, in March.

“Membership provides a unique opportunity to collaborate with other organizations who share our vision for innovative, forward-thinking education. I am confident we will build meaningful relationships and partnerships through P21 that will serve our teacher advisers in new ways,” Fromm said.
