Don't forget to read what's in the registration booklet so you know what you're registering for, exactly. There are some new programs this year, including Connect with Colleges (free!) and a media tour of the Museum of Tolerance followed by the Los Angeles Times.
Remember that registering online is the only way to reserve spots in these and other events that are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Register before the earlybird deadline of March 27 to receive reduced rates, and save even more by keeping your JEA and NSPA memberships up to date.
…there are rays of knowledge waiting to be soaked up by journalism students and advisers when thousands of them descend on Anaheim, Calif. for the 2008 JEA/NSPA spring convention.
LAYOUT CONTEST MATERIALS NOW AVAILBLE • CLICK HERE to get access to the materials for the spring 2008 newsmagazine contest.
FROM THE WRITE-OFF FOLKS • If you're interested in juding the on-site Write-off competitions Friday, April 18, e-mail Jolene Combs at wccombs@cox.net.
FROM LINDA PUNTNEY, March 8, 2008 • Logan Aimone and I are in Anaheim at the month out meeting with the hotel and tomorrow with the local committee. About 15 minutes ago the Anaheim reservationist told us that the convention block is full. This is after I increased the block last spring to the maximum amount the hotel will let us have.
We have already contacted Chris MacDonald at A Room With a View and he is now preparing the sites and materials to help those of you who are not in the hotel find accomodations. If you can give him this afternoon to get things set up he will be ready to help you secure rooms starting tomorrow. His phone number is 1-800-780-4343. His email is arwav@charter.net.
There are literally dozens of hotels within easy walking distance from the Marriott so finding a room nearby should not be a problem.
As in the past, if you have more rooms than you need please use the list serve to transfer them to advisers who do need rooms.
We appreciate your patience and look forward to seeing you in Anaheim for an Outstanding Convention in Orange County which will truly be the Happiest Convention of Earth.
Outreach Academy • A Journalism Education Association initiative to promote both diversity and membership growth, the Outreach Academy is a free, intensive pre-convention seminar for publications advisers who have five years or fewer advising experience and/or teach in schools traditionally underrepresented in JEA membership, especially low-income, urban and rural schools. The program includes discussion of teaching journalism to highly diverse populations, effective instructional techniques, resources for teachers in and out of the classroom, and organizations ready to help advisers. The history of Anaheim is a fanciful one, dating from the days of Spanish explorers, through the gold rush and a 1950s peak as an orange-grower’s mecca. But when Walt Disney decided to build his first amusement park here, Anaheim’s worldwide fame was secured forever.
Today, Disneyland (and the Disney California Adventure park built next door in 2001) is only the most well-known of Anaheim’s attractions. Shopping and restaurant options abound, with Downtown Disney, The Block at Orange and the Anaheim GardenWalk (scheduled to open in 2007) providing no less than three modern, open-air retail/entertainment centers. In mid-April, either the baseball Angels or the Ducks hockey team could be playing nearby. The 1,200-seat Grove Theater hosts concerts and other performances throughout the year, Knott’s Berry Farm isn’t far away and the Discovery Science Center is packed with interactive exhibits.
Don’t forget the beach communities: the world-renowned surfer’s paradise of Huntington Beach, the upscale artisan community of Laguna Beach and dozens of others reside within 30 miles of Anaheim. Los Angeles (Hollywood, Universal Studios) is immediately to the north and San Diego (Sea World, San Diego Zoo) is a short drive south from the city.
And all under one roof at the Anaheim Marriott, you’ll fi nd the most student journalism expertise available anywhere in one place. Get your ticket to learning and pass through the turnstiles for…
…the Happiest Convention on Earth!
