Humphrey resigns director-at-large position to pursue new opportunity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Journalism Education Association announced today that Joe Humphrey, MJE, has resigned from his three-year post as director-at-large, effective immediately.

Humphrey is leaving the journalism classroom to accept a full-time marketing job for Hillsborough County Public Schools, the district in Tampa, Florida, where he has been teaching for the past 13 years.

President Sarah Nichols, MJE, said, “Joe represents the best of the best. His passion for students, journalism and lifelong learning comes across in everything he does and makes Joe not just an ideal board member but also a wonderful person to be around. As president, I am sorry to lose his positive energy and can-do attitude from the board of directors. But as his friend, I’m thrilled for Joe to take on a new opportunity, and I know he’ll be perfect in the role.”

Humphrey said he considers JEA a vital part of his professional life and plans to remain involved.

“I’m excited to use many of the skills I’ve sharpened through JEA, including social media, storytelling and entrepreneurship. Thanks to JEA for helping me prepare for this exciting new opportunity,” Humphrey said.

In accordance with Article V, Section 2 of the organization’s bylaws, Nichols will appoint a new director. The new director shall reside in the same voting region Humphrey represented: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, D.C. or West Virginia.

Any teacher/adviser member in good standing who resides in the states listed is eligible to apply. The new director will begin immediately and will fill the remainder of the three-year term, ending May 2020.

“The board of directors is committed to welcoming a new member to our team and offering as much personal training and support as possible to make a smooth transition,” Nichols said.

Candidates for the director-at-large position should submit a letter of interest and resume to Nichols (via email to sarahjnichols.sjn@gmail.com) by June 25, 2017.
