The Executive Director of Quill and Scroll is a consultative leader and manager who knows and understands journalism, news media, non-profit organizations, professional and/or scholastic educational services and public university culture. The Executive Director will oversee the daily operations of the international honorary society’s programs and its related Foundation, and reports to the organization’s Board of Trustees. The successful candidate will work in an action- and service-oriented environment and will strive to maintain the program as a national leader in scholastic journalism education. This includes supervising professional and student staff, production of media for internal and external audiences, and planning, managing and developing educational and membership services. This position also serves as a liaison with the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication, high school journalism/media educators and students, and other scholastic journalism programs.

Required Qualifications

Education and knowledge of an advanced type normally associated with a degree at the Master’s or Doctoral level (in journalism, education, communications or related subject areas preferred) or an equivalent combination of related education and experience is required.

Proficient written and oral communication skills, with proven abilities in writing and editing are essential.

Possesses strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.

Demonstrated competency of computer software applications related to word processing, publication and web layout and design, and e-communication channels.

Desired Qualifications

Reasonable, at least 3-5 years, program and administrative experience in management, supervision and organization of staff and financial budgeting are desired.

Previous experience as an administrator or staff member of a scholastic media organization or program.

Considerable knowledge of university-level policies, procedures and regulations.

Research and grant writing experience.

Secondary school or higher education teaching or professional experience.

Professional journalism or media production, strategic communications, philanthropy, fundraising and/or marketing experience.

Demonstrated experience working effectively in and promoting a diverse workplace environment.

The successful candidate will have opportunities to teach as an adjunct faculty member, lecturer or to serve as a program administrator with the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication in addition to the core responsibilities of the Executive Director position.
